Hospitalito Atitlán is a wonderful resource for the community of Santiago Atitlán. For $25 a month, you contribute to the health and well being of a woman and her baby by sponsoring prenatal care and later continuing with the baby’s wellness check-ups.

Tz’utujil Maya women are at high risk for complications during pregnancy due to the prevalence of diabetes, the lack of formal education, language barriers and personal economic situation. Their children are at high risk for life-long health issues when prenatal care, safe delivery, and infant care are not received. In response to high rates of maternal and infant mortality in the recent past, the Hospitalito Atitlán works hard to make these services available to all families. To ensure that the families most in need can receive healthy beginnings, Hospitalito Atitlán’s Maternal Infant Sponsorship program was created.

Families are selected for the program on the basis of need such as severe economic hardship, a history of complications in pregnancy or lack of social support. They receive free prenatal care, well-baby visits, and additional opportunities for education.

The women agree to attend all pre-natal check-ups and take pre-natal vitamins. Their fist visit includes the full battery of prenatal tests, necessary for the physician to understand a woman’s overall health. The couples participate in monthly educational classes led by the HA social worker, medical staff and specialists. The parents will be counseled in the importance of prenatal care, good nutrition and how to recognize danger signs in pregnancy and delivery.

After baby’s arrival, the Hospitalito staff teaches family planning, importance of breastfeeding, early stimulation, babies first foods, when to take baby to the doctor, the importance of books in the home, and a variety of health education topics. Twice a year the baby you sponsor will get a check up by a pediatrician at Hospitalito Atitlán.

HA provides quality care 24-hours a day including obstetrical, lab services, deliveries and emergency c-sections. Much of this care is provided by medical volunteers and medical specialists from around the world who are able to offer the most excellent healthcare in the area. We make it our mission to ensure that all families have the opportunity to receive this care.

As a sponsor, you will receive letters and photos of your family. We hope that you will correspond with them as well and continue your sponsorship thru the first critical five years of the child’s life. Sponsors are encouraged to visit their family when in Guatemala. Your privacy is guaranteed.
